What is Overhead and Underground Transmission Lines


About Overhead and Underground Transmission system.


       
Electric Power needs to be carried over long distances from the point of generation to the point of consumption.


This Transmission is done either through overhead lines or underground cables. Each of these two methods of Transmission has its own advantages and disadvantages.



Overhead Transmission System


An Overhead Power line is a structure used in Electric Power Transmission and distribution to transmit electrical energy along large distance.

It consists of one or more suspended by towers or poles.

Since most of the insulation is provided by air, overhead power lines are generally the lowest-cost method of power transmission for large quantities of electric energy,

Overhead Transmission Lines are cheaper as the insulation cost is lesser and the conductor material cost is lesser and the conductor material cost is lesser too. They also have better heat dissipation.
                 

In this system transmission of electrical power by using overhead transmission line over a long distance.


In such system the appropriate spacing is provided between the conductor, at the supports as well as at intermediate points.

This spacing provides insulation which avoids and adds Electrical discharge to occur between the conductors. It is cheaper than the UG system and lines are subjected to the false occuring to lightning, short circuit and breakage of lines etc.,


but it can be easily repaired compared to UG cable system. In this system the insulation must be provided between the conductors and Supporting Structures.

Hence the maximum stress exists between conductor and earth.


However, they have significant disadvantages. Overhead lines are vulnerable to lightning strikes which can cause interruption.

Overhead lines use bare conductors and can cause damage if they break. They are considered to be unsightly as they mar the scenery of the landscape.

The maintenance cost of overhead lines is more and the voltage drop in overhead lines is more.



Underground Transmission System


Underground transmission due to cables is costlier than overhead transmission as the ground needs to be excavated.

This can be difficult when passing though geographic obstruction such as hills, marshes and rivers.

Special trenches need to be constructed when passing through loose soil, besides, heat dissipation in Underground cables is an issue.

Thus, the conductors have to be thicker. The insulation required for the cables is expensive. Hence, it is difficult to use underground cables for voltages at HV levels (>33 KV).
           

Underground cables may have to be rerouted to accommodate other Underground structures such as pipelines, sewage lines etc.

It is necessary that the routes of underground lines are clearly marked with sign boards to prevent accidents when excavations are carried out for other reasons at a later date.
             
The cables are generally preferred in Underground System.

All conductors must be insulated from each other in the underground system.

As the voltage level is high, insulation required is more hence due to insulation difficulties the voltage level used in Underground system is below 66KV, while the voltage level used in overhead transmission lines can be as high as 400KV.

             
The maintenance cost of the underground system is less compared to overhead system.

In case of crowded area where overhead system using bare conductor is not practicable where I cable is preferred.


The lines surges are suppressed by using UG cables. Hence UG cables must be used for the last path for the connection which saves transformer and generators from the damage due to line surges.

Last in August 2014, research at Michigan state university created a fully Transparent Solar Panels.

We can use this Transparent Solar panel at the windows of house, buildings, office etc. by doing this we can generate renewable energy, by this technology many consumer will shift to use renewable source of energy and we can reduce the pollution. 





We can also use this Transparent Solar panels at the windows of cars and their also we can generate Electricity. 

We can also use this technology in our motor bikes or cycles to generate Electricity.

So Transparent Solar panel have many advantage compared to black color and flexible black color solar panel.

Tesla coil is device which use in high voltage engineering and which is invented by great scientist Nikola Tesla in 1891.
  • What is Tesla coil?
Tesla coil is the two stage transformer which generates high voltage and high frequencies.



Power level of Tesla coil is 1 to 6 kw or more and frequency level of Tesla coil is between 100 to 500 kHz.


Tesla coil is the high voltage and high frequency power generator.

A regular supply is given to the primary coil.



  • How Tesla coil works?
When we apply the supply to primary coil , first capacitor will be charge and then current can flow in  primary coil.


For large amount of current can flow in primary coil , so primary coil is made of copper wire. Copper wire is good conductor for flow large amount of current.

Now, Due to this current emf is generated in primary coil and due to emf magnetic field is generated. 

Generated magnetic field is coupled with secondary coil. Due to this magnetic field large amount of energy or voltage is get at output and it will be show by pulse or spark.

All the primary energy transfer to the secondary. Secondary coil output is increases whenever primary all the primary output voltage is transferred to the secondary.

If Tesla coil design is good, then above 85% of energy transferred primary coil capacitor to the secondary coil.

So voltage gain of Tesla coil is greater than the conventional transformer.

What is Corona effect and formation of corona ??



Corona Effect 


When an alternating potential difference is applied across two conductors whose spacing is large as compared to their diameters, there is no apparent change in the condition of atmospheric air surrounding the wires if the applied voltage is low.



However, when the applied voltage exceeds a certain value, called critical disruption voltage, the conductors are surrounded by a faint violet glow called Corona.



The phenomenon of Corona is accompanied by a hissing sound, production of ozone, power loss and radio interference.


The higher the voltage is raised, the larger and higher the luminous envelope becomes, and greater are the sound, the power loss and the radio noise.


If the applied voltage is increased to breakdown value, a flash - over will occur between the conductors due to the breakdown of air insulation.



The phenomenon of violet glow, hissing noise and production of ozone gas in an overhead transmission line is known as Corona.



If the conductors are polished and smooth, the corona glow will be uniform throughout the lentgh of the conductors, otherwise the rough points will appear brighter.


With d.c voltage, there is difference in the appearance of the two wires.


The positive wire has uniform glow about it, while the negative conductor has spotty glow.

Some ionisation is always present in air due to cosmic rays, ultra-violet radiations and radioactivity.


Therefore, under normal conditions, the air around the conductors contains some ionised particles ( i.e., free electrons and +Ve ions ) and neutral molecules.


When p.d. is applied between the conductors, potential gradient is set up in the air which will have maximum value at the conductor surfaces.


Under the influence of potential gradient, the existing free electrons acquire greater velocities.


The greater the applied voltage, the greater the potential gradient and more is the Velocity of free electrons.



When the potential gradient at the conductor surface reaches about 30 KV per cm (max value) the Velocity acquired by the free electrons is sufficient to strike a neutral molecule with enough force to dislodge one or more electrons from it.



This produces another ion and one or more free electrons, which in turn are accelerated until they collide with other neutral molecules, thus producing other ions. Thus, the process of ionisation is cumulative.


The result of this ionisation is that either Corona is formed or spark takes place between the conductors.
