Advantages and Disadvantages of Corona

Advantages and Disadvantages of Corona

The Engineering Street

Disadvantages of Corona effect
01. There is a loss of power due to corona, which reduces transmission efficiency.

02. Due to corona ozone is formed and it causes corrosion of conductor due to chemical reaction.

03. The effective capacitance of the conductor will be increased when corona is present in the line conductor.

04. Due to corona loss current drawn in the line conductor will be non-sinusoidal in character, hence it causes some interference with neighbouring communication line due to electrostatic and electromagnetic induction.

Advantages of Corona effect

01. Corona in a transmission line works as a safety value for surge.

02. Corona in a transmission line reduces effect of transients produced by surges.

03. Due to formation of corona, air surrounded by the conductor becomes ionised and effective diameter of the conductor increases. This increased diameter of the conductor reduces the electrostatic stresses between the two conductors.

methods of reducing the Corona effect

While designing the line and sub-stations effect of corona plays very important role, because due to corona flash over takes place between two conductors and over the insulator, which causes damage of equipments.

Following are the methods by which corona effect can be reduced.

01. By increasing size of the conductors : By increasing the size of conductor, the critical disruptive voltage and critical visual voltage is raised and hence corona effect can be totally eliminated. But it is not advisable to increase the spacing beyond the limit, because it increases the lower and it's accessories cost.

02. By increasing the size of the conductors : By increasing the size of conductor, the critical disruptive and critical visual voltage is raised which in turn reduces the effect of corona.
